Taking your boat out on the water in Canada is a recreational activity every local and tourist should try their hands on for a fun time. Moreover, if you’re a fishing enthusiast, all the better! In Ontario alone, you can find at least 158 different freshwater fish species. But, of course, if you’re planning to travel ahead, you can find way more!
Are you wondering which water species are you most likely to catch when fishing in Canada? While we can’t go through them all in this blog post, we’d still like to share eight of the most common ones that you’ll find with wild abandon:
1- Northern Pike
Northern Pike is one of the most popular fish that you can easily find anywhere in Canada. This species is typically recognized by its olive green and fading yellow scales with a long and thin body. An adult size Northern Pike usually weighs around sixty-three pounds.
2- Silver Redhorse
Silver Redhorse, also known as a sucker, looks quite similar to the Northern Pike, but they are usually smaller and silver-scaled. While they mostly reside in Alberta and Quebec, you may also find some of them lingering elsewhere, like the St. Lawrence River. Their average weight is between two to five pounds.
3- Black Crappie
Black Crappie is instantly recognizable due to the distinct black and white spots scattering throughout its body. Found usually in the Northside, fish from this species weigh around five pounds only.
4- Walleye
Walleye, or a pickerel, get their unique name because their eyes always point outwards as if looking at a wall in front of them. These known Canadian fish species have a dark green back, pure-white stomach, and golden sides. Moreover, they range from two to twenty-four pounds in weight.
5- Rainbow Trout
Rainbow Trout are usually mixed with salmon due to their build. However, you can tell them apart by their silvery tone scales that have one distinct pink or red-colored line in the middle of their sides. They weigh between two to six pounds in general.
6- Largemouth Bass
It’s impossible to go fishing in Canada and not find a bass. Seeing that they’re extremely common in all parts of Canada, you’ll surely find Largemouth Bass during your fishing adventures. These fish species have a large mouth that goes beyond their face, hence the name. Plus, they mostly weigh around fifteen to twenty pounds.
7- Bowfin
You’ll definitely find a Bowfin if you’re fishing in lakes or rivers based in and around Quebec and Ontario. These make quite a handful of fish species with their pretty long figure, weighing approximately twenty-one pounds on average.
8- Channel Catfish
Finally, Channel Catfish are mostly located in the lower part of Canada, and you can identify them easily because of their whiskers. The older these iridescent gray fish get, the heavier they become. However, an average size Channel Catfish usually weighs around ten pounds.
While these eight fish aren’t the only ones you’ll find when fishing in Canada, these are still the most common fish species that you’d see time and again!
